Fiber Power—A New Hope for Healthy Kidneys
Brief description of study
Did you know that lower phosphorous = happier kidneys?
Phosphorus is a mineral found in many everyday foods and is important for healthy bones and energy. Healthy kidneys help remove extra phosphorus from the body, but when someone has chronic kidney disease (CKD), phosphorus can build up in the blood. Over time, this can affect bone, heart, and kidney health.
Right now, managing phosphorus usually means changing your diet or taking medication. This study is looking at whether a fiber supplement might be another way to help lower phosphorus levels in people with CKD.
You may be eligible to participate if you are an adult with moderate chronic kidney disease and are able to attend study visits (including 48-hour overnight stays) at University Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.
Detailed description of study
Your first visit will be a screening visit, where blood and urine samples are collected and you complete a health questionnaire to see if you qualify.
If eligible, you will take part in three separate 3-week study periods. During each period, you will:
- Eat only the meals provided by the study
- Take a fiber supplement or a placebo with meals each day (mixed with water)
Between each study period, there is a 3-week break, during which you return to your normal diet and do not receive study food or supplements.
The study team will guide you through each step and schedule visits before, during, and after each study period.
Participation lasts about 15 weeks and includes 7 in-person visits, plus occasional visits to pick up study food. Three of the visits include a 48-hour overnight stay at the Indiana Clinical Research Center in Indianapolis.
