Brief description of study

DO YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW HAVE A HEALTHY BABY BETWEEN THE AGES 0F 3 AND 6 MONTHS?

Researchers at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health are looking for Black and/or Hispanic parents for a research study on infant sleep, feeding, and health.

Through this research study we want to learn about your child’s sleeping and eating patterns, and how your child grows during their first two years. We are focusing on Black and Hispanic families, because less research has been done in these families.

Research participants will be paid up to $200 in gift cards for study activities, including completing online forms, two virtual visits, and wearing a sleep tracker for one week.

Detailed description of study

Who Can Be in the Study
  • Babies who receive primary care at Eskenazi Health.
  • One adult and one baby will take part in the study.
  • The adult who is in the study must be Black or Hispanic and must live with and care for the baby.
  • The baby must be healthy, born at full term, and between 3 and 6 months of age.
What Happens in the Study
  • You will be asked to attend 2 virtual study visits (1 hr each)
  • Your family’s involvement in the study will take about one month.
  • We will also follow your child’s growth over the next two years by reviewing their medical records.
Activities in this study include:
  1. Completing online forms (approx. 2hrs):  We will ask for information about your family background and your baby’s sleep, feeding, and health.
  2. Collecting a small hair sample (10 min) from yourself and your baby:  You will be given instructions and will return the samples by mail (samples will be used to test for a stress hormone called cortisol).
  3. Completing a sleep tacker and daily activity log: For one week we will ask you and your baby to wear a sleep tracker during the day and at night (you will wear the sleep tracker around your wrist and the baby will wear it on the ankle) and we will send you an 5 minute online form each morning where we ask about your baby’s sleep and eating over the past day.
  4. Medical records: For the next two years, we will check your child’s medical record for their growth, such as height and weight (you will not need to do anything during this time).
Compensation for Participating
  • Families who complete all study activities can receive up to $200 in gift cards.

The purpose of this research study is to learn about sleep and feeding patterns in healthy babies and how they grow. This study is for Black and/or Hispanic parents or caregivers who live with and care for a healthy, full-term baby who is 3 to 6 months old and receives primary care at Eskenazi Health.

Participants will include 1 adult and 1 baby. Participants will complete online forms about family background and the baby’s sleep, feeding, and health. Participants will have 2 virtual study visits that last about 1 hour each. Participants will collect a small hair sample from both the adult and the baby and mail the samples back; the samples will be used to test for a stress hormone called cortisol. For 1 week, the adult will wear a sleep tracker on their wrist and the baby will wear a sleep tracker on their ankle, and the study team will send a short online form each morning about the baby’s sleep and eating over the past day. The study team will also review the baby’s medical records for growth (such as height and weight) over the next 2 years, and the family will not need to do anything during that time.

Who can participate:
Black or Hispanic parents/caregivers and their babies may be able to participate if they:

  • Have a healthy, full-term baby who is 3 to 6 months old
  • Have a baby who receives primary care at Eskenazi Health
  • Are Black or Hispanic and live with and care for the baby

Study timeline and visits:
The main study activities take about 1 month and include 2 virtual visits. The study team will also review the baby’s medical records for growth for the next 2 years.
