Brief description of study

The first purpose of this study is to determine how utilizing a higher degree of turnout affects a dancer?s balance. The second purpose is to determine how a dancer?s balance is affected by the varied lighting and space conditions encountered in typical training and performance.

Detailed description of study

Therefore, the purpose of the study is: 1) to evaluate the impact of turnout amount on overall balance in classical ballet dancer subjects; and, 2) to evaluate the impact of different environmental factors (different visual input produced by including and excluding standard mirrors and lights) on functional performance in classical ballet dancer subjects.
This study takes place in Bloomington and is only recruiting from the IU Bloomington ballet department.

Participants will not be paid for their participation.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: healthy
  • Age: 18 years - 25 years
  • Gender: All

Inclusion Criteria
Enrolled as a student at Indiana University-Bloomington
A declared ballet major within the Jacobs School of Music
Exclusion Criteria
Have a lower extremity injury that is currently limiting their participation in ballet classes or rehearsals
Have had lower extremity surgery within the last 6 months
Have any vestibulocochlear dysfunctions (such as vertigo) that may negatively impact their overall balance
