Brief description of study

We are seeking children and teenagers to participate in a research study on decison-making.
Impulsive Decision Reduction Training (IRDT) is a psychoeducational and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention designed to reduce impulsive and risky decision-making and promote the use of a more adaptive, thoughtful decision-making style in adults.
The primary objective is to investigate the feasibility, tolerability and preliminary effectiveness of a novel intervention, Impulsive Decision Reduction Training for Youth (IDRT-Y), to reduce risky, impulsive decisions and to increase future orientation when making decisions in adolescents (ages 10 – 17).

Detailed description of study

 Study participation involves:
  • Participation in 8 therapy sessions over 8 weeks that can be completed online
  • Completing surveys about decision-making and experiences receiving therapy
Study participation lasts 24 weeks and subjects will receive counseling and education at no cost. 
Subjects will be compensated via e-gift cards sent by email and can earn up to $300 for participating.

Eligibility of study

You may be eligible for this study if you meet the following criteria:

  • Conditions: child,children,youth,teen,teens,teenager,teenagers,adolescent,adolescents,decision making,decision-making,risky decision,risky decisions,risky decision-making,therapy,counseling,cognitive behavioral therapy,CBT,disruptive,disruptive behavior,disruptive behaviors
  • Age: 10 years - 17 years
  • Gender: All

Eligibility Criteria:

Children:
  • Children ages 10-12 and adolescents ages 13-17 years old with and without disruptive behavior disorders or substance use disorders
  • Willingness to engage in 8 sessions of therapy over a period of 8 weeks to reduce risky decision making 
  • English speaking and can read English at a fourth-grade reading level

Caregiver:
  • Legal guardian of a child/adolescent participating in the study
  • English speaking and can read English at an eight-grade reading level
